Hydrafacial Treatment Aftercare: What to Do in the First 72 Hours
By Muse Medspa Mainline | May 5, 2026
Quick truth: our Hydrafacial clients love that “skin looked amazing” feeling right after they leave. Keep it that way by treating the first 72 hours like a gentle recovery window: protect your skin from direct sun, skip sweat-heavy workouts, and hold off on strong actives like retinoids and acids while your glow settles in.

Hydrafacials are one of our favorite “instant refresh” services in Bala Cynwyd (Bala Plaza / City Avenue corridor) because they cleanse, extract, and hydrate in one session using a medical-grade hydradermabrasion system. People tell us their skin feels “incredibly clean, smooth, and hydrated” right away. Aftercare is what keeps that clean-skin, even-complexion look from fading fast.
If you’re busy, commuting, fitting in workouts, and trying to look good for weekend plans, this is the low-effort checklist we want you to follow for the first 72 hours.
The first 24 to 48 hours: protect the “deep clean” feeling
Do this today
- Cleanse gently. Think mild cleanser, lukewarm water, and your hands only. No scrubs, cleansing brushes, or gritty exfoliants.
- Hydrate and protect. A simple moisturizer is great, and SPF 30+ is non-negotiable in the morning.
- Keep hands off your face. Your pores feel extra “open and clean” right after, so picking or touching tends to undo the calm, smooth finish.
Skip this for 24 to 48 hours
- Sweat and heat: strenuous workouts, sauna, hot tub, and long hot showers. Sweat + heat can trigger redness and irritation, and it can clog things back up.
- Strong skincare actives: retinoids, AHA/BHA acids, exfoliating pads, benzoyl peroxide, and at-home peels. Give your skin a breather.
- Heavy makeup right away: we generally recommend waiting at least a few hours before applying makeup, especially anything full-coverage.
If you’re driving along City Avenue or hopping the Cynwyd Line after your appointment, plan for easy aftercare. An early evening or weekend slot can be a smart move so you’re not rushing into sun exposure or a workout right after.
Days 3 to 7: keep the glow, don’t “overdo it”
A lot of people leave our Bala Cynwyd location feeling relaxed and looking noticeably brighter. The temptation is to start stacking every active product you own because your skin looks so good. Don’t. This week is about maintaining that smooth, hydrated look you saw in the mirror right after your Hydrafacial treatment.
What we want you to keep doing
- SPF every single morning. Reapply if you’re outside. Mid-Atlantic summers, especially hot, humid July days, can wreck a fresh facial result fast if you skip sunscreen.
- Stick with gentle hydration. This is the week for calm skin, not “tight and squeaky.”
- Watch the gym schedule. If you’re prone to redness or congestion, give yourself that full 48-hour window before going hard.
People often tell us their Hydrafacial was “a game changer” because it deep cleans their pores while staying gentle. That gentle part is exactly why you shouldn’t follow it with a harsh scrub, a strong peel, or aggressive extractions at home.
Your Hydrafacial routine: cleanser, moisturizer, SPF (and that’s it)
Hydrafacial treatment aftercare doesn’t need a 10-step routine. Simple usually wins, especially in the first 72 hours. Here’s the framework we recommend most often:
AM (for the first 72 hours)
- Gentle cleanse
- Light moisturizer (skip anything heavy and occlusive if you’re breakout-prone)
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ and reapply when you’re outdoors
PM (for the first 72 hours)
- Gentle cleanse
- Moisturizer only
If you’re itching to restart actives: bring them back slowly after the first few days, and let us know what you’re using. We’ll tell you what to reintroduce first based on how your skin handled the Hydrafacial.
If you’re also targeting sun damage, keep your aftercare extra strict. We wrote more on that here: Hydrafacial treatment for sun-damaged skin.
If something feels “off, ” reach out, we’ll talk it through
“From start to finish everything was amazing. The staff was so welcoming, professional, and knowledgeable, they made me feel completely comfortable the entire time.”
one of our regulars
Right after a Hydrafacial, mild pinkness can happen, and it usually settles quickly. Your skin should feel clean, smooth, and hydrated, not hot, itchy, or angry. If redness lingers, you’re getting bumps that don’t calm down, or something just doesn’t look right, let us know. We’re big on explaining things clearly and keeping you comfortable, especially if this was your first facial.
