One of the best things we hear after Lip Augmentation is that the appointment feels quick, and the lips look full, natural, and perfectly balanced. To protect that result, your #1 rule for the first 48 hours is simple: keep swelling down and keep pressure off your lips. That means ice on and off, sleep elevated, and skip anything that heats you up, dehydrates you, or pushes on the area.
The first 24 to 48 hours: ice, elevation, and no pressure on the lips
Right after your Lip Augmentation, swelling and a little tenderness are normal. Some people also notice tiny injection dots early on. In our Bala Cynwyd (Bala Plaza and City Avenue corridor) office, we walk you through aftercare so you don’t have to guess once you get home.
Quick rules that matter most: Ice intermittently (10 to 15 minutes on, then off), keep your head elevated, and don’t rub, press, or “test” the new shape.
What we generally recommend doing
- Use a clean cold pack with a barrier (like a soft cloth). No direct ice on skin.
- Sleep on your back if you can, with your head slightly elevated. It helps with morning puffiness.
- Stick to gentle, easy foods the first day if you’re feeling tender. Think “no wrestling with a bagel.”
- Keep your lips clean and hands off. If you need to apply a balm, wash your hands first.
What to avoid right away
- Heat and heavy sweating: hot showers, saunas, hot yoga, and long sun exposure.
- Alcohol and smoking: both can worsen swelling and slow healing.
- Pressure activities: no kissing, no straws, and no aggressive lip rubbing.
If you’re commuting on City Avenue or heading into Center City the next day, plan for some swelling. It’s usually not “hide in your house” swelling, but you’ll feel it. Keep a cold pack ready and give yourself a little extra time in the morning.
Days 3 to 7: when the lips start settling (and why “week-one patience” pays off)
A lot of people feel excited fast because the shape can look great early. We’ve had clients tell us the form looked like a “perfect pout” within hours, with tiny swelling. Still, your lips are settling. Give it the full week before you judge the final look.
During this first week, keep avoiding the stuff that flares swelling. In Bala Cynwyd summers, the sun and humidity are real. If you’re outside and sweating, swelling tends to stick around longer, and irritation risk goes up.
Busy-weekend tip: If you’ve got plans in Ardmore, Wynnewood, or heading into Philadelphia, keep your schedule “photo-friendly” by skipping hot workouts and long outdoor heat for 48 to 72 hours.
Common don’ts for the first week
- Don’t schedule dental work for a few days unless we’ve cleared it with you.
- Don’t pick at dry skin on the lips. Let it heal and keep it protected with a simple barrier balm.
- Don’t go swimming in pools or hot tubs for 48 to 72 hours.
- Don’t panic if you notice uneven swelling early. Lips rarely swell perfectly evenly.
And remember, some clients take longer than a week to feel fully “settled.” We’ve had people compare week-one photos and say they still had another week for full recovery. That’s normal.
Barrier balm, gentle cleansing, and bruising support: products that keep results looking clean
Simple usually wins in the first few days. Keep the area clean, avoid harsh exfoliation, and don’t pile on a bunch of new products “just because.” If we recommended a specific ointment for you, stick with that.
Our go-to aftercare “types” (not a complicated routine)
- Gentle cleanser: mild, fragrance-light, and no scrubs on the lip area.
- Barrier balm: a plain, protective balm to prevent cracking and over-drying.
- Bruising support (optional): arnica or bromelain only if we’ve cleared it for you.
- SPF: once the area is healed, protect your lips like you protect your face.
Makeup is the big question. For most people, we recommend skipping lipstick and lip makeup for 24 to 48 hours unless we tell you otherwise. If you need to look polished for work, focus on the rest of your face and keep the lips clean and protected.
When to call us: the “normal” stuff vs the stuff we want to hear about
We’re big on explaining things clearly, and clients mention that a lot, including that we take our time and answer questions without rushing. That doesn’t stop when you walk out the door. If something feels off, we want to know.
Reach out right away if you notice: increasing or very uneven swelling after 48 hours, severe pain that isn’t helped by over-the-counter meds, fever, spreading redness or warmth, or any livedo or unusual skin discoloration.
If you’re coming in from Wynnewood, Ardmore, Narberth, Merion Station, or Haverford, getting back to us is usually straightforward. And if you’re in Philadelphia and can’t get away easily, call first. We’ll talk it through and guide your next step.
If you’re still deciding and you want the full overview before your first appointment, read what to expect from your first Lip Augmentation visit. If your goal is thin or aging lips, our Lip Augmentation guide for thin or aging lips breaks down the approach. You can also browse our injectables services in Bala Cynwyd to see what pairs well with lips when you’re ready.
A quick note for Bala Cynwyd plans: Suburban Square errands, City Avenue commutes, and “tomorrow at work” lips
If you’re squeezing Lip Augmentation in around errands or a commute, keep your first 48 hours simple. Bring water, plan a low-heat day, and give yourself an easy night of sleep. Those little decisions are usually what separate “I’m puffy forever” from “I look good fast.”
And if you’re aiming for that natural, balanced look our clients talk about, aftercare is part of the plan. Take care of the swelling, keep pressure off the lips, and check in with us if anything worries you.
